Concept

In an era where capitalism and technological development are surging, innovation continuously expands the boundaries of human perception, rapidly and abundantly offering new ways to experience the world. Technology and new media art ride this tide, advancing vigorously into the virtual realm. As we navigate a generation marked by sensory overflow, the fragments of daily life often reveal themselves only in retrospect—prompting us to reflect on the pressing questions and possible directions of our time.

'After Perceiving the After' is positioned as a perceptual practice and mode of action rooted in this high-speed age, structured around three conceptual dimensions:

After

This dimension regards contemporary phenomena as a foundation and attempts to slow down the pace to observe each moment of perceptual flow. It explores how shifting rhythms and frequencies of perception can generate new possibilities. Much like various historical 'post-' movements, 'after' here becomes a form of gentle resistance and aspiration—a divergent point, a source of new beginnings.

After Perception

Artistic creation often involves both a gaze into the distance and a glance backward. This process, akin to realizing something belatedly, helps both artists and audiences trace richer and broader contexts. In working with new media and creative practices, we become acutely aware of the 'temporal gap of perception' brought on by media and speed—where subtle thoughts surge like waves through the mind over time.

Spectrums of Possibility

Rather than chasing the forefront of technology or competing for attention, this exhibition returns to the core spirit of media art—its critical inquiry into medium and subject. It simultaneously turns inward and expands outward, advancing with the waves without forgetting to look back. The works span a diverse range of sensory experiences—from the intense and high-speed to the subtle and introspective. Some explore 'data computation, the dialectic of virtual and physical, and corporeality'; others engage with 'dreamscapes, paradoxes, and performative relationships.' Video works examine narrative, generative processes, and the ontology of the medium; installations feature multichannel handmade sound systems, light and spatial environments, and stop-motion animation models. There are also game-based pieces grounded in media critique and personal experience, probing the possibilities of space, participation, and embodied interaction.

As millennials born at the intersection of analog and digital, raised alongside the rise of the internet, and now shaped by data-driven realities, we launch this exhibition as a culmination of our academic training and creative energies. After Perceiving the After outlines the contours of our generation—a dynamic of reflection, dialectic, and progression amidst high-speed transformation.

Accompanying technological advancement, the frontiers of perception continue to expand, offering ever-faster ways of engaging with the world. Amid this rush, fragments of daily life fall between the cracks, only to suddenly come into focus when we look back.

This exhibition frames After Perceiving the After as a perceptual practice grounded in a high-speed era, unfolding across three thematic axes—After, After Perception, and Spectrums of Possibility. It aims to respond to the characteristics of our fast-paced time by proposing alternative perceptual rhythms. Through the exploration of personal experience and creative inquiry, it reveals the subtle disjunctions in perception and charts the evolving spectrum of technology and new media art—a powerful gesture at the intersection of art and technological practice.

After Perceiving the After gestures toward a generational contour that is distinctly ours—a dynamic of contemplation, critique, and movement forward amid acceleration.
